The Stone Town Nan Madol
Those of us who have read one of the works of the famous American writer James Rollins «The Abyss» will recall him mentioning the ancient city of Nan Madol, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the proposed plot Nan Madol may seem a fictional geographic location.
But in fact it is a very real place, which can be reached by plane. The ruins of the once flourishing culture uniting small nations of today Micronesia make this place original.
Today it is an independent state — the Federated States of Micronesia. It is located on a number of volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean. And one of those dwarf states is Palu, on one of the islands of which lies the famous stone city of Nan Madol.
What makes this derelict city truly unique is the fact that all the buildings located herein are made of basalt rough blocks arranged in a distinctive way. They form city walls and the walls of residential and religious buildings. It is worth noting that, according to many historians who have studied the Nan Madol site, these stone megaliths were formed when lava entered the ocean, forming stone blocks of almost rectangular shape.
The builders of Nan Madol had to only deliver blocks weighing 5-10 tons to the construction site and install them on their place. And when the construction of Nan Madol began around 1200, we can only imagine how all those works were carried out at that time.
